Business Energy Bill Calculator

Estimate your annual electricity or gas costs in seconds

Use our free business energy bill calculator to estimate how much your electricity or gas could cost over the year, based on the rates shown on your current bill.

Simply enter your unit rate, standing charge, annual consumption, VAT rate and Climate Change Levy amount, where applicable. If you are calculating electricity costs, you can also choose whether you are on a single rate tariff, a day and night tariff, or a day, evening and weekend tariff.

The calculator will then estimate your annual business energy cost and break this down into an approximate monthly amount.

This tool is designed to give you a useful guide only. Your actual business energy bill may vary depending on your supplier, meter type, tariff structure, billing period, VAT status, Climate Change Levy position and any other charges or exemptions that may apply.

If your estimated costs look higher than expected, WeSave can review a recent bill and compare your current rates against prices from a wide panel of trusted UK suppliers.

How does our business energy bill calculator work?

Our business energy bill calculator helps you estimate what your electricity or gas could cost over a year, based on the rates and usage shown on your current bill.

To use the calculator, you’ll need a few details from a recent business energy bill. This usually includes your unit rate, standing charge, annual consumption, VAT rate and Climate Change Levy charge, where applicable.

For electricity, the calculator also allows you to choose the type of tariff you are on. This includes a single flat rate, a day and night rate, or a day, evening and weekend tariff. If you are on a split-rate tariff, you can adjust the usage slider to estimate how much of your energy is used during each charging period.

The calculator uses the following formula:

1. Energy cost before VAT

Usage in kWh × unit rate

  • standing charge × 365 days
  • usage in kWh × Climate Change Levy = estimated subtotal

2. VAT

Subtotal × VAT rate = estimated VAT

3. Total estimated cost

Subtotal + VAT = estimated annual bill

The calculator then divides the annual amount by 12 to give you an estimated monthly cost.

Please remember that this is a guide only. Your actual bill may vary depending on your supplier, meter type, tariff structure, billing period, VAT status, Climate Change Levy position and any other charges or exemptions that apply.

What do the different parts of your business energy bill mean?

Business energy bills can be confusing, especially when they include unit rates, standing charges, VAT, Climate Change Levy and other industry costs. Here’s what the main parts mean.

Unit rate – our unit rate is the amount your business pays for each unit of electricity or gas used. It is usually shown in pence per kilowatt hour, written as p/kWh.

Standing charge – The standing charge is a fixed daily cost that applies regardless of how much energy your business uses. It covers the cost of maintaining your supply, meter, network access and other fixed industry costs.

Annual consumption – Annual consumption is the total amount of electricity or gas your business uses over a year, measured in kilowatt hours. You can usually find this on your latest bill or annual statement.

Climate Change Levy – Climate Change Levy, often shown as CCL, is a government charge applied to most business electricity and gas usage. Some small usage supplies, charities, non-profit organisations and mixed domestic/commercial premises may qualify for reduced VAT or CCL relief.

VAT – Most UK businesses pay VAT at 20% on business energy. However, some supplies may qualify for the reduced 5% VAT rate, for example where usage is below the small usage threshold or where the premises are used partly or mainly for domestic or charitable purposes.

Where can I find my unit rate and standing charge?

You can usually find your unit rate and standing charge on the second or third page of your business energy bill. The unit rate is normally shown in pence per kWh, while the standing charge is usually shown in pence per day.

If you have electricity and gas with different suppliers, you may need to check two separate bills. If you are on an electricity tariff with separate day and night rates, or day, evening and weekend rates, these should also be shown on your bill.

What if I don’t know my annual usage?

If you don’t know your annual usage, start by checking a recent bill. Many suppliers show either your annual consumption or an estimated annual consumption figure.

You can also estimate your annual usage from a monthly bill by multiplying the usage shown by 12. However, this may not be fully accurate, as many businesses use more energy at certain times of year. For example, heating costs are often higher during the winter, while some hospitality, leisure and tourism businesses may use more energy during peak seasonal periods.

For the most accurate comparison, it is best to use a recent bill based on an actual meter reading rather than an estimated reading.

Why does the calculator ask about VAT and CCL?

VAT and Climate Change Levy can make a noticeable difference to your final business energy bill.

Most businesses pay 20% VAT and Climate Change Levy on their electricity and gas. However, some smaller supplies may qualify for the reduced 5% VAT rate and may not be charged CCL. That is why the calculator allows you to adjust these figures manually.

If your annual usage is below the small usage threshold, the calculator can automatically set VAT to 5% and CCL to 0. You can still amend these fields if your bill shows something different.

What is the Climate Change Levy?

The Climate Change Levy is a tax on business energy usage. It was introduced to encourage businesses to use less energy and improve energy efficiency.

From 1 April 2026, the main Climate Change Levy rate for both business electricity and gas is 0.801p per kWh.

The charge is usually applied to each kWh of electricity or gas used by a business. It is normally shown as a separate line on your bill, although the way it appears can vary by supplier.

Some businesses may be exempt or eligible for relief. This can include certain low usage supplies, charitable use, domestic use, or businesses covered by specific energy efficiency agreements.

How much VAT should my business pay on energy?

Most businesses pay VAT at 20% on electricity and gas. However, some businesses may qualify for the reduced 5% rate.

This can apply where business energy use is below the small usage threshold, or where the energy is used for certain qualifying purposes, such as domestic accommodation or charitable non-business use.

If you are unsure whether your business should be paying 5% or 20% VAT, it is worth checking your latest bill or speaking to your supplier.

Can this calculator tell me if I’m paying too much?

The calculator can help you understand roughly what your current rates are costing your business each year. However, it does not compare your prices against the wider market.

Business energy prices change regularly and can vary depending on your usage, location, meter type, contract length, credit profile and the time your quote is secured.

If you think your current rates look high, WeSave can review a recent bill and compare your prices against a wide panel of trusted UK suppliers.

What is the average business energy bill in the UK?

The average business energy bill in the UK depends on several factors, including the size of the business, how much energy it uses, where it is based, the type of meter it has and the tariff it is currently on.

A small office, shop or salon will usually have very different energy costs compared with a restaurant, hotel, factory, warehouse or care home. This means there is no single “average” business energy bill that applies to every company.

As a rough guide, typical annual business energy costs for electricity and gas combined may look something like this:

Micro business – Up to around £3,000 to £4,000 per year, depending on usage and whether the business uses both electricity and gas.

Small business – Typically around £4,000 to £8,000 per year, although this can be higher for businesses with longer opening hours, commercial kitchens, electric heating or refrigeration.

Medium-sized business – Often around £8,000 to £20,000 per year, depending on the type of premises, annual consumption and contract rates.

Large business – Larger businesses can easily spend £20,000+ per year on electricity and gas, particularly where they operate machinery, heating systems, production equipment, large kitchens, leisure facilities or multiple sites.

These figures should only be used as a general indication. Your actual business energy bill will depend mainly on your annual consumption, unit rates, standing charges, VAT, Climate Change Levy and any additional charges or exemptions that apply.

The best way to understand whether your current energy costs are reasonable is to check your latest bill and compare your current unit rates and standing charges against live supplier pricing.

Recent 2026 business energy guides show micro businesses paying around £3,600 per year for combined gas and electricity, while larger businesses can see annual bills above £19,000, depending on usage and tariff.
