What Is Commercial Waste?

Commercial waste refers to any waste produced by a business as part of its day-to-day operations. This includes waste from offices, retail premises, hospitality venues, industrial sites, landlords and public-facing businesses.

Common commercial waste types include:

General

Business Waste

Any light, compressible waste that cannot be recycled, such as cling film, food wrappers, and wet wipes.

Mixed Recycling

Business Waste

Clean and dry items such as paper, cereal boxes, cans, magazines and newspapers, and plastic bottles or containers.

Food

Business Waste

Loose food waste, including uneaten food, plate scrapings, food preparation waste, and leftovers, suitable for collection.

Glass

Business Waste

Empty, clean glass bottles and jars only. No mirrors, window glass, Pyrex or heavy-duty glass.

Cardboard

Business Waste

Any dry, loose, and clean cardboard, such as flattened boxes and packaging, with no food residue or contamination.

Washroom

Business Waste

Improve washroom hygiene with dependable feminine hygiene units and nappy waste services, supporting cleaner, safer facilities for staff and visitors.

Confidential

Business Waste

Protect your business and your customers with secure confidential waste disposal, designed to safeguard sensitive information and reduce data security risks.

Offensive Clinical

Business Waste

Safely manage waste contaminated with bodily fluids using clearly identified tiger-striped bags, helping protect staff, customers and public health.

Hazardous

Business Waste

Hazardous clinical waste is safely contained using orange bags, ensuring infectious materials are handled in line with health and safety requirements.

Sharps

Business Waste

Sharps waste is handled responsibly using dedicated containers designed for the safe disposal of both contaminated items and medicinal sharps.

UK law requires all commercial waste to be collected, transported and disposed of by licensed waste carriers, with appropriate documentation in place. We ensure your waste service meets these legal requirements from day one.

2025 Food Waste Regulations – What Businesses Need to Know

From 31 March 2025, new food waste regulations apply across England. These rules require many businesses to separate food waste from general waste and arrange dedicated food waste collections.

If your business produces food waste, you may be required to:

  • Separate food waste from general waste

  • Arrange dedicated food waste collections

  • Use licensed waste carriers

  • Keep correct waste transfer documentation

These rules apply to businesses across sectors such as hospitality, food service, retail, care settings and workplaces with food preparation areas .

Failure to comply can result in:

  • Enforcement action

  • Financial penalties

  • Increased compliance and audit risk

If you’re unsure whether your business is affected, we’ll assess your waste streams and arrange compliant food waste collections with minimal disruption to your operations.

These requirements apply even if food waste is a small part of your overall waste output

Waste Containers & Bin Sizes

Choosing the right container is essential for cost control and efficient collections. We help you select the correct bin size based on your waste volumes and collection frequency.

Common Wheelie Bin Sizes

Bin Size
Typical Capacity
120L
1–3 bin bags
240L
3–4 bin bags
360L
4–5 bin bags
660L
10–12 bin bags
1100L
15–18 bin bags

120L Wheelie Bin

The 120L wheelie bin is best suited to low-volume waste environments. Ideal for small offices, clinics or businesses with limited waste generation, it offers a neat, space-saving solution. This size works well where storage space is restricted or waste output is minimal.

120L Commercial Waste Bin

240L Wheelie Bin

The 240L wheelie bin is one of the most commonly used commercial bin sizes. It suits smaller businesses with regular waste production, such as shops, salons and small hospitality sites. Compact and efficient, it fits well into limited spaces while supporting frequent collections.

240L Commercial Waste Bin

360L Wheelie Bin

The 360L wheelie bin offers extra capacity while staying compact enough for many commercial yards. It suits growing SMEs, busier offices, small cafés and sites where you want fewer collections without moving up to a large container.

360L Commercial Waste Bin

660L Wheelie Bin

The 660L wheelie bin offers a strong balance between capacity and space efficiency. Suitable for medium to high waste-producing businesses, it’s often used by restaurants, offices, care settings and mixed-use premises.

This size provides flexibility without taking up excessive external space.

660L Commercial Waste Bin

1100L Wheelie Bin

The 1100L wheelie bin is designed for high-volume sites that generate consistent waste — ideal for larger hospitality venues, supermarkets, warehouses and multi-tenant buildings. It reduces overflow risk and often supports better-value collection schedules.

1100L Commercial Waste Bin

Large Commercial Containers

For businesses producing higher volumes of waste, larger commercial containers offer a more efficient and cost-effective solution than using multiple wheelie bins.

There are two main types of large commercial waste containers used by UK businesses, Front End Loader Containers (FEL) and Rear End Loader Containers (REL):

Container Type
Typical Sizes
Best Suited For
FEL (Front End Loader)
8yd or 10yd
Very high waste volumes, large commercial sites
REL (Rear End Loader)
8yd, 10yd, 12yd, 14yd
High-volume sites with frequent collections

Front End Loader (FEL) Container

Front End Loader (FEL) containers are large commercial waste containers designed for businesses producing very high volumes of waste, where efficiency and reduced collection frequency are essential. These containers are lifted from the front by specialist refuse vehicles, making them ideal for sites with limited manoeuvring manoeuvringspace.

FEL containers are commonly used by large hospitality venues, retail parks, warehouses, distribution centres and industrial sites with consistent bulk waste output.

FEL Container Sizes & Typical Capacity

  • 8 Yard FEL – holds approx. 60 standard bin bags

  • 10 Yard FEL – holds approx. 80 standard bin bags

Why choose an FEL container?

  • Designed for high-volume waste production

  • Fewer collections compared to multiple wheelie bins

  • Efficient use of space in tight service areas

  • Suitable for general waste and dry mixed recycling

  • Robust containers built for commercial use

  • Cost-effective for sites with consistent bulk waste output

FEL containers provide a practical, cost-effective solution for managing large waste volumes while reducing site clutter and simplifying collection schedules.

FEL

Rear End Loader (REL) Container

Rear End Loader (REL) containers are a flexible commercial waste container option for businesses producing moderate to high volumes of waste. These containers are emptied from the rear by specialist collection vehicles, making them suitable for a wide range of commercial environments.

REL containers are commonly used by offices, retail premises, hospitality venues, care settings, schools and light industrial sites , where regular collections are required and waste needs to be managed efficiently.

REL Container Sizes & Typical Capacity

  • 8 Yard REL – holds approx. 60 standard bin bags

  • 10 Yard REL – holds approx. 80 standard bin bags

  • 12 Yard REL – holds approx. 120 standard bin bags

  • 14 Yard REL – holds approx. 140 standard bin bags

Why choose an REL container?

  • Ideal for general waste and recycling

  • Suitable for frequent collections

  • Easy for staff to load safely

  • Fits well in service yards, car parks and designated waste areas

  • Scalable as waste volumes increase

  • Suitable for mixed waste streams across multiple bin types

REL containers offer an excellent balance between capacity and footprint, helping businesses control waste costs while keeping sites tidy, compliant and well managed.

Rear End Loader (REL)

💡 REL vs FEL – What’s the Difference?

While REL and FEL containers of the same size hold similar waste volumes, the key difference is how they’re collected:

  • REL containers are emptied from the rear and suit sites with more flexible access

  • FEL containers are lifted from the front and work well where space is restricted

We’ll always advise on the most suitable option based on your site layout, waste type, collection frequency and access requirements .

Our 5-Step Business Waste Setup Process

We make switching or setting up business waste services straightforward, with clear steps and full support from start to finish.

Whether you’re moving premises, changing providers or setting up waste services for the first time, we manage the process for you.

Quote & Review

We start by understanding your business and how you produce waste. This includes reviewing your current setup or discussing your requirements from scratch, such as waste types, bin sizes, collection frequency and site access. This allows us to recommend a solution that’s both compliant and cost-effective.

Contract & Onboarding

Once you’re happy with the proposed solution, we take care of the onboarding process. This includes handling any required credit checks, confirming service terms and setting everything up with the waste provider – keeping paperwork and admin to a minimum for you.

Activation Call

Before services go live, we confirm all practical details with you. This includes bin placement, access times, collection days and any site-specific restrictions. This step helps ensure collections run smoothly from day one, with no missed lifts or access issues.

Bin Delivery & Collections Begin

Your bins are delivered to site and collections begin as scheduled. You’ll receive clear confirmation of delivery dates and collection frequencies, so you know exactly what to expect and when.

Ongoing Support

Our support doesn’t stop once your waste services are live. We remain available to help with changes to collections, bin sizes, waste streams or additional sites. As your business grows or changes, we’ll adapt your waste setup to match.

Duty of Care & Compliance

All UK businesses have a legal duty of care when disposing of waste.

We ensure your business receives:

  • A valid Waste Transfer Note (WTN)
  • Fully licensed waste carriers
  • Correct waste stream segregation
  • Clear documentation for audits and inspections

Unlike many providers, there’s no separate charge for your WTN, which can otherwise cost up to £100 per year elsewhere.

Transparent Pricing & Fair Use

We believe waste pricing should be clear and predictable.

Our waste solutions include:

  • No separate bin rental fees
  • No hidden administration charges
  • No unexpected overweight charges within agreed fair-use thresholds (we’ll explain these clearly upfront).
  • Clear monthly billing
  • Fixed retail pricing for easier budgeting

If weight thresholds are exceeded significantly, we’ll always discuss solutions before additional charges apply.

WeSave is an independent UK utilities broker built on transparency and long-term value.

  • Access to a wide panel of UK waste providers

  • Competitive pricing across all waste streams

  • Clear, compliant contracts

  • Fast setup and responsive support

  • Simple billing and documentation
